Ion exchangers consist of resins in the form of small 0.2 mm beads of polymer construction charged with acid or basic functional groups with the capacity to absorb cations and anions from a solution. These are replaced by other cations and anions in equivalent quantity and charge. When the exchange capacity of the resins is exhausted, they are regenerated by an acidic solution for cationic resins and a basic solution for anionic resins. Ion exchangers are mainly used to soften, decarbonise and demineralise water. They can also be used to selectively absorb dissolved metals.
